Unlicensed Contractor Scams Us ($130K): Can We Get Our Funds Back?
We have a situation where a “contractor” presented himself as licensed, bonded, etc. (We have an insurance claim)
He has taken over 130K of funds and states work to this amount has been done. This is a blatent lie. We also found out that he never pulled the correct permits and is not licensed. Our home is in shambles, I am 7 months pregnant and the city is doing inspections on the home today. (we just found out he did illegal electrical work).
We HAVE filed a complaint with the Attorney General regarding consumer fraud but believe there was criminal fraud done as well as items pertaining to the IL Construction / Homeowners act.
We do not know what type of attorney we should speak to in order to attempt to gain back the funds so that we can get our house up to code, safe and completed. We were looking @ Construction Attorneys as well as Consumer Fraud attorneys and didnt know which would be more beneficial.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (Obviously this is just a small summary of our ordeal!) …..Thank you

Amicable Divorce: Do I Still Have to Pay Child Support if Spouse Doesn’t Want It?
Currently separated for more than 10 years, would like to file for divorce, looking for fast and inexpensive, spouse and I have agreed not fighting for ANYTHING, however we have two daughters ages 17 who will be 18 in Jan 2010.
As ME the non custodial parent who unfortunately is current unemployed due to budget cuts, I still have to pay child support even if the other parent doesn’t need nor want it.
With the process of divorcing taking several months, if only a few months before the kids turning 18, am I sitll liable for this even the other parent and I are in agreement that we would help the other out? We’ve been doing ok all along, we just don’t want to be married! Please answer if you would.
Wife Got Mortgage: Now HSBC Reported Late Payment on My Credit Report. Can I Sue?
Hello, I would like to know if it possible to file a lawsuit against HSBC Bank. The reason i want to file one is because, my wife bought a house last year and she is owner and she is the only one on the mortgage.
She recently lost her job. Because of that she did not make house payments for the last couple of months, I was not on the mortgage, it was never a joint account but I recently found out that HSBC reported the late payments on my Credit File with all the three credit service companies!
I have notifed Transunion, Equifax and Experian and filed a dispute. I hope that the late payment info will be removed from my credit report since I was never a co borrower or a joint account holder, but because of this action by HSBC bank i am losing time and money and I am unable to now get a loan for my business. I would like to know what can I do and if I can sue this bank for its false actions.
Attorney Freezing Funds: Should I Fight it With Another Attorney?
An Attorney’s office froze me and my husbands bank account due to a citation that I feel was satisfied already years ago.
Now it seems as if they’re doing it again. Both of us are receiving pension and S.S.I. only, and I feel as if we’re exempt from them doing this. I can’t pay my bills because our funds are directly deposited. I told them this and now they are no longer answering their phone.
Should I get another attorney to force them unfreeze my funds?
Tax Problems: How Should I Deal With Owed Back Taxes?
I did not have any taxes withheld from my 2007 and 2008 paychecks. I owe about 2K from 2007 and 3K from 2008 just for Federal. I live paycheck to paycheck.
What legal route should I take to setup some kind of payment method with IRS for Illinois and Federal?
Also I checked and I did set my W-2 dependents up properly with my employer and they have that on record. Is there any action I can take with regards to that matter as well?
I know I should have checked my statements and now am going to pay the price for not doing so. I get direct deposit and never bother to check online to verify my withholdings.
What should I do?
What are the required and recommended steps?
I asked this question to a friend with some legal knowledge and they told me that I should not contact the IRS directly because I will get burnt and that I should seek legal help.
