  1. Having bad credit is not the end of the world. With the economy and housing market at a serious low, there are alot of people in your situation.

I would advise knowing your credit score and reasons it is low, and bring up the subject first before bothering to look at a place to rent. Many larger apartment complexes have steadfast rules and will not rent to someone who is under XXX for a credit score – no matter what the circumstances.

You will probably have better luck going to a private individual, or small apartment building where you know the owner or the manager at least.

Offering to pay many month’s rent upfront may sound like a good way to go, but some may wonder about the origins of all the cash. Offer one month extra first and go from there.

Most private landlords don’t really care what your credit score is as long as you have a steady source of income. You can have a score of 800+, but if you don’t have a job, the likelihood of paying rent on time dwindles rather quickly.

Also advised is getting your credit score cleaned up ASAP. Credit scores can often be raised quicker than most people believe. A reputable firm that solely deals with this topic is your best bet. We have advised clients to go to the folks at Lexington Law. They are first rate.

    Good luck!
